Please forgive my lack of translation, Just wanted to shout out to my brothers and sisters across the water. America like Germany struggles with its self-image. On a domestic and international level America is still stuck in the mire of what is American. While the mainstream likes to believe itself pluralistic and accepting of diversity, the simple fact of the matter is that the majority use the rhetoric of diversity while dismissing the significant idiosyncrasies that each diverse population brings to our overall culture. This is accomplished by claiming that "race does not matter" or "we are all the same" while every empirical study demonstrates that we are not the same and race is still an extremely important issue within this country. This is cultural oppression of the worse kind because it marginalizes each diverse segment at the alter of the majority. Moreover it is not a realistic view of our world from a global or domestic perspective and ill prepares our entire nation to engage and understand the differences and similarities that define our global village. I think this is part of the reason why most Americans are often unable to adapt when visiting another culture and why we are often frowned upon around the world. Quite simply, we repress our richness in order not to deal with it. African American solidarity, activism, and nationalism are still very much a threat to mainstream society and, ironically, often labeled as divisive and racist. That is why I am so very proud of my Afro-Deutcher brothers and sisters. Your organization brings attention to the rich diversity of the Fatherland by demonstrating that African-Aryan is as much a part of Germany as any other segment of your population. Your efforts educate the world on the African face of Germany, something that at least in America, we are woefully ignorant of. While I am certain that there are many who discourage rather than encouraged this expression, I applaud your spirit and challenge to the negative reaction of anything that promotes black identity and consciousness. My mother is native German and often I deal with the incredulous reaction of Americans whose mental picture of German does not extend beyond blond hair and blue eyes. I have experience similar reactions when traveling internationally as the mental picture of America is often of Euro-Americans. Several times I had long conversations in which I had to explain that African-Americans are "real Americans" and every bit as valid as any other racial or ethnic segment of our population. Keep up the good work, only by illustrating and celebrating the differences as well as the commonalities of our cultures can we achieve true diversity and unity as children of God and one
